On September 19, 1985 a powerful earthquake awakened the people of Mexico City. Thousands of lives were lost and hundreds of thousands became homeless. In the midst of overwhelming heartbreak, the Mexican people fought back and began to rebuild. The images of tragedy, courage and hope touched the people of the Bay Area. This is also their story. Rigo and scholarship winners

Abrazos and Books funds scholarships for university bound high school seniors from Santa Clara County. It was founded in 1990 by three time Emmy Award winner Rigo Chacon, retired ABC Channel 7 South Bay Bureau Chief. The scholarships are based on merit and need, independent of ethnic background.
